Black Grads Matter!

San Pedro High School's Black Student Union.

Our Story!

San Pedro High School's Black Student Union has grown and developed over the last few years. In 2015 a small group of students volunteered to create and produce an Assembly with the focus of educating students on the History of African Americans. While the group loosely assembled around February for the purpose of educating the student body. The leadership skills which developed from students participating in the yearly program, prompted the club to officially charter in 2016.

Prior to the Pandemic, the BSU began actively seeking to enhance student experiences. We were fortunate enough to participate in the HBCU College Fair, a lecture aboard the USS Iowa, Young Black Scholar activities and the annual African American History Month Program.

While the pandemic has minimized the number of active participants. The impact of the BSU is even more evident as systemic racism has yet again been revealed. Of 2021, thus far, the current BSU leadership has impacted the school community with their class and candid handling of racism on the school site. They are transforming the nature of the group and creating a focus group that will reshape the role of the BSU in the San Pedro Community in years to come. Change does not come easy.
